Living safely in the municipality of Peel en Maas

We believe it is important that everyone in Peel en Maas can live and work comfortably and safely. Together, we ensure a safe environment. We therefore ask you to pay particular attention to the following topics.

Swimming safely

There is plenty of water in Peel en Maas and the surrounding area, such as rivers, streams, lakes and ponds. So always swim carefully. Drowning is more common than many people realise. Dangerous situations can arise, particularly in unsupervised areas.

Tips for safe swimming:

  • Never swim alone.
  • Do not drink alcohol or take drugs before you go swimming.
  • Swim where it is permitted and under supervision.
  • Enter the water gradually, so that your body can get used to the colder temperature of the water.
  • What if you get into difficulty? Float on your back to calm down, or use something to float on, such as a football or a plastic bag. That will keep you afloat. Call out or wave for help. Wait calmly until help arrives.
  • What if you see someone in difficulty? Call 112 straight away. Don’t go into the water yourself; try to help from the shore instead. For example, use a piece of rope, a branch or something that floats.

Prevent a wildfire

During dry spells, a wildfire can break out easily. This is often due to a lack of attention. You can help prevent fires when you go to the woods or the countryside.

  • Smoking is prohibited in the Peel and Maas woods all year round.
  • Always put rubbish in a bin or take it home with you.
  • Do not use fire pits, torches or barbecues in the countryside.
  • Only park your car in a car park. Hot parts of a car can set dry grass alight.
  • Keep roads and paths clear so that the emergency services can get through easily.
  • Have you spotted a fire, or signs of one? If so, move away from the fire and call 112 straight away. Do not try to put out the fire yourself.
